La Piedad - October 22, 2010

the basics:
We, Amy and Olivia,  were driving down the rustic streets of Broad Ripple last Friday, and were naturally drawn to the faint sound of Mexican music coming out of a quaint yellow building.  Our stomachs were growling and our spirits high to dine at this acclaimed Mexican restaurant, known as La Piedad. We were a little let down, however on the inside, and felt the outside looked a tad more real than the drab tables and chairs lining the small room. Amy, however, though the decor added authenticity, "I think the chairs give it a rough, Mexican feel." There were decorative Mexican cutouts, and Mexican Flags dotting the walls. The whole restaurant has a very relaxed, chill vibe. We were able to relax WHILE enjoying great food. TVs playing Mexican shows, with subtitles, were also present. Outside seating was an option, and the porch was cluttered with Mexican food enthusiasts. Takeout was available, handy for those on the go, but still desperate for a quick fix.

We were greeted instantly, by our waiter, who was strangely not wearing a nametag. Throughout the course of the night, he spoke bits of Spanish to us, and this helped us feel like we were sitting down in a real Mexican restaurant. All of the waiters were Mexican, which pleased us. Our service was impeccable, and everything was delivered fast and efficiently. (see below for chart). Before we even sat down, a bowl of chips and salsa magically appeared. The chips were delicious, and in a small basket, perfect for those who are trying to loose weight. The salsa, as noted by Olivia, contained the "right mix of spice and nice."

food:
Amy:  Nachos La Piedad w/Chicken
The sauce was oddly creamy, which prevented me from taking the rest home, because i feel like the sauce would ruin the chips. The chips were as delicious as before, and the chicken was shredded nicely.
Drink: Coke
Bill : $10.87

Olivia: Quesadilla Rellena w/beef
The beef overpowered the cheese, but the Mexican rice was excellent. The ample amount of sour cream and guacamole on the side balanced out the rest of the meal. The portion size was just right.
Drink: Water (drink refills were very quick)
Bill: $7.90

TUNE IN NEXT WEEK - OCTOBER 22/2010 FOR LA PIEDAD!

FIRST REVIEW : Cancun Mexican Restaurant, Carmel, IN

 Welcome!
Tonight, Amy and Olivia stayed close to home and went to Cancun Mexican Restaurant, located in the heart of downtown Carmel. Our Special VIP for this week was Rachel Zimmermann, a junior at Carmel High School. Rachel was excited to join us and may be back for future tastings!

We entered the restaurant at 7:01pm, and we were instantly immersed. The restaurant is small and cozy, yet at the same time spacious. We were guided to a booth at the far left. The booth perfectly seated four, and there was decorative artwork on the wall. The dim lighting went perfect with the soft Mexican music playing. "I hate when Mexican Restaurants play, like, Ke$ha, you know? This makes it so much more authentic," Rachel noted.  Our waiter, Sergio, a middle aged Mexican man, came to ask us what we wanted to drink. Amy ordered a Coke, Olivia ordered a Diet Coke, and Rachel ordered a Virgin Red Bull margarita. The margarita was originally mostly alcohol, but Sergio was happy to replace it with a non alcoholic drink for a fraction of the price! This was the height of Sergio's service.

Sergio did recieve our drink orders until 7:10, and we did not receive our drinks and order until 7:25. In the mean time, Olivia coughed on tortilla chips for a long amount of time, and if our drinks would have been delivered earlier, this might have been prevented. The chips were slightly warmed and very thin. The salsa was not chunky at all, perfect for those people who like a smooth, even, texture while eating chips and salsa. We ordered.

Amy:  Sour Cream Enchiladas
Refried Beans : Perfect, a little small of a portion size, but not too clumpy.
Spanish Rice: 1st bite tastes strange, but is swell when you get into it.
Enchiladas: Have just enough spice.
"Cancun is an authentic Mexican Restaurant....the taste is very real and not stereotypical."

Olivia: Cheese Quesadilla
Quesadilla: Perfect, slightly warmed, with browned edges. It look bland on the plate. They might have considered spicing it up.
"The festive music made the food even better!"

Rachel: Red Bull Margarita, Virgin
Margarita: Very large and decorative, on the rocks with salt. The cherry was too large. The redbull was fused perfectly with the margarita mix.
"My margarita was too expensive! It was 5 dollars virgin, and originally $9! I could have ordered a meal for that. "

It was agreed upon that Sergio was a poor waiter. We had to ask for refills, and at the end it was unclear whether we payed up front or on the table.
"I feel like I'm in Mexico!" - Amy
